On October 18, 2025, the Hale Cemetery Association hosted a dedication ceremony at Hale Cemetery in Norfolk, New York, to celebrate the site’s recent placement on the National Register of Historic Places and to recognize the people who helped make it possible. More than 50 community members attended, including John Burke (Legislator for the Town of Norfolk), Town Supervisor Charles Pernice, members of the American Legion Post 925 (Norfolk), the VFW Post 1143 Honor Guard (Massena), and local clergy.
The ceremony included:
Welcome and remarks from local officials
A gun salute and Taps by VFW Post 1143 Honor Guard
Closing prayer by Pastor Judy Van Kennen, United Church of Christ, Massena
Closing remarks by Keith Mitchell, followed by light refreshments at the Norfolk American Legion Post #925
A special thank-you goes to the Town of Norfolk and to Ted Ashley of Northern Machining for installing the official historic marker, and to the William G. Pomeroy Foundation for providing the National Register roadside marker.
During the ceremony, the Hale Cemetery Association formally recognized two individuals whose service has kept the cemetery beautiful and well-run:
In honor of Daryl Martin
Daryl was thanked for his ongoing, hands-on care of the cemetery grounds. His work ensures Hale Cemetery remains a dignified, peaceful resting place for families and visitors.
In honor of Ronald Sanborn
Ronald was recognized for his many years of leadership as President of the Hale Cemetery Association. His guidance, time, and commitment have been essential to the cemetery’s operations and long-term stewardship.
Awards were presented by St. Lawrence County Historian Nancy LaFaver.
This milestone was truly a community effort. The Association extends sincere gratitude to:
Superintendent John Margittay and Director Pete Darabon for leading the unveiling of the historic marker
NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation staff, Dan Bagrow and Leslie Krupta, for their guidance
The family of George and Violet Simons for pursuing this recognition
Local historians Shirley Dubois and Teresa Dumas for historical support
VFW Post 1143 Honor Guard (Massena) for military honors
Their combined efforts helped secure national recognition for this important local site.
